Shinola Hotel to open in Detroit in December

This December, Detroit will be welcoming its newest hotel, Shinola Hotel. From the first hospitality concept of two iconic Detroit-based brands -- luxury watchmaker, Shinola and real estate firm, Bedrock -- the Shinola Hotel will have 129 guest rooms. Each hotel room will have a residential style along with 16,000 square feet of retail, a lobby restaurant, mezzanine lounge, conservatory as well as event space.

Furniture, wall-coverings and accessories are custom-designed and primarily manufactured in the US, with much of it produced in Michigan by partners including Pewabic, known for its covetable ceramics; Booms Stone Company, responsible for the elegant stone finishes in the guest rooms; and Great Lakes Stainless, whose decorative metals can be found throughout the hotel’s public spaces.

Marbleized wallpaper mimics marble found buried in the Rayl’s building. Waterworks, the iconic American bathroom design company, partnered with Shinola on custom bathroom fixtures that take cues from caseback details of Shinola’s luxury watches. Blankets, woven in the US, carry a signature Shinola Hotel stripe pattern. American-made Heath Ceramics created custom tableware for the Living Room and in-room dining.

Shinola Hotel is designed to surprise guests on their first visit or their twentieth. Room keys, powered by RFID chips, will be complemented by custom leather fobs with an engraving of the room number and the hotel’s street address. Bath amenities, made specifically for Shinola Hotel, are inspired by Rayl’s, one of the building’s previous occupants. Each suite will have a coveted Shinola Runwell turntable (retail price $2,500) and a curated collection of vinyl. Various rooms will include some of Shinola’s most iconic products including the Power Supply Extension Cord and shoe polish and leather care, along with items made especially for the hotel including a bedside clock, leather throw pillows, and custom blankets.

The hotel’s nod to Michigan doesn’t end with its craftmanship and can even be found throughout the mini bar which will overflow with iconic staples including Great Lakes Chips, Shinola Cola, Vernors Ginger Ale, and local craft beers to name a few.

For food and beverage as well-crafted as their surroundings, Shinola turned to Andrew Carmellini and NoHo Hospitality Group partners, Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom, whose portfolio includes beloved eateries and bars like New York’s The Dutch, and Locanda Verde, and Westlight. At the Shinola Hotel, NoHo Hospitality Group will oversee San Morello (an urban Italian neighborhood restaurant influenced by the coastal towns of Southern Italy and Sicily that will serve authentic, wood-fired dishes, pizzas and house-made pastas using local, seasonal ingredients), Evening Bar (a comfortable, classic American bar serving seasonally crafted cocktails and bar bites), The Brakeman (an American beer hall featuring rotating drafts of craft beers from the Midwest while serving up Buckets ‘o Birds,’ honey-butter biscuits, and local farm-stand sides from Carmellini’s adjoining fried chicken spot), the Living Room, in-room dining and banquet/event spaces.

The Shinola Hotel will be located at 1400 Woodward Ave.
